Our favourite beach in North Queensland. A gorgeous 1 hour drive through the canefields with the coastal range on the left and Queensland's two largest mountains on the right. Close enough to Cairns to be convenient and just far enough to be an escape.
And - you walk straight onto the beach from the garden.
The Beachie is the upper half of a weekend holiday home owned by a local family. You will always have the property to yourself because the owners do not come down from the Tablelands to stay when The Beachie is booked.
Why do we love Bramston?
- It’s close to Cairns - 1 hour through the spectacular landscape of green canefields flanked by the coastal range and the towering 5200' backdrop of Mt Bellenden Ker and Mt Bartle Frere.
- Bramston has an ambience that reminds us of childhood holidays without a care in the world. Time stops still and the rush and noise of the city is replaced by the gentle sound of the waves and the whispering of the breeze through the she-oaks and melaleucas.
- You can forget the mind-numbing conformity of shopping centres because there is just the one cafe/shop for basic supplies. Bring your food and drink with you and replenish in Innisfail or Babinda. The motel runs a good restaurant which attracts visitors at the weekend, as do the two small caravan parks on the beachfront.
- The fishing is good and the swimming is safe - a large stinger net is in place from November to May. The best and most refreshing swimming in the summer months, though, is in the freshwater creeks such as at Josephine Falls and Babinda Boulders.
- The absolutely best reason to stay at The Beachie is because it is beachfront. You go to sleep and wake up to the sound of the sea. There is nothing like it.
- Take your coffee to the beach at dawn and watch the sunrise or make the first footprints on the beach and find a pretty shell. In the evening, at sunset, you wander down to the beach - drink in one hand, snacks in the other - grab a chair and soak it all up. Your neighbours down the beach will be doing the same thing.
Walk on the wild side - North Bramston Beach
Take a drive (via Sassafras St) to North Bramston - about 8km to the end of the road in the Graham Range National Park. Walk down to the beach, cross the creek and head north.
Start your walk about an hour or so before low tide. Do not swim in the lake behind the beach - it may be home to a saltwater crocodile.
The walk along the beach is lovely. The Frankland Islands are on your right, High Island ahead and Cape Grafton and Fitzroy Island in the distance. The rainforest comes right down to the beach. Huge granite boulders dot the beach making small private beaches. Look up in August/September and you will see great clumps of flowering golden orchids atop the grey rocks.
After 6km the beach turns left towards the small settlement of Russell Heads. The Mulgrave and Russell Rivers enter the beautiful turquoise Coral Sea here with the 3000' wedge of Walsh's Pyramid rising clear in the background.
A week at The Beachie will give you enough time to explore the amazing surrounding area. A rough list of things to do:
-
Explore the pretty sugarcane town of Babinda
-
Swimming & BBQ lunch at Babinda Boulders
-
Kayaking on Babinda Creek
-
Swimming & sliding at Josephine Falls. Beautiful 600m walk through rainforest.
-
Visit the beautiful gardens and fantasy buildings at Paronella Park, Mena Ck.
-
Mamu Canopy Walk on the Palmerston Highway
-
Other walks through the rainforest from the Palmerston Highway
-
The waterfall circuit on the Atherton Tablelands around Millaa Millaa and Malanda.
I hope you will visit Bramston. It is a special place for us because the first home listed on the website in 2005 was our own cottage at Bramston.

Review from Chantel N
Fantastic quiet beach retreat. Loads of space outside for the kids to play. Beautiful gardens. We had a great time sitting on the verandah watching the kookaburras and listening to the waves crash. The house was perfect. It was clean and had everything we needed. The DVD player didn't work when we got there but julie was very prompt to get a replacement to us. Honestly have no complaints and would highly recommend Julie's house to anyone. Thanks for having us.

Review from Jacqui M
We started our holiday at Bramston Beach, and it was such a relaxing place to begin to unwind. The house is lovely, especially the view from the house and balcony onto the beautiful tropical garden and the sea through the trees. The house has everything you could possibly need on holiday, it’s one of the most well-equipped and comfortable Airbnb places we have stayed in. The beach is lovely too, with a beautiful hilly backdrop at each end. Totally recommended if you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay!
