You will soon see why Edge Hill is the most sought after area to live in Cairns. It is one of the oldest residential areas of Cairns because it is a little higher than the city and catches the trade winds. The backdrop is the lush green forest growing on the upper reaches of the Whitfield Range. The streets are wide and have some of the best examples of the highset timber "Queenslander" houses.
The heart of Edge Hill is the fiveways with a cluster of cafes and great restaurants - all within a 5 minute walk from Pyne Street. The most beautiful street in Cairns, Collins Avenue, runs off from the fiveways, past Pyne St, to the Cairns Botanical Gardens and the Tanks Arts Centre. You have to spend an hour or two wandering round the botanical gardens to understand what rainfall combined with a warm climate can do. Walk across Collins Avenue to take the boardwalk through the swampy rainforest and an amazing stand of Pandanus to the fresh and saltwater lakes. There are BBQ facilities and a children's playground here.
The Friends of the Botanic gardens conduct a 60-90 minute garden tour on Mondays-Friday at 10.30am, meeting at the Friends house behind the cafe in the main Flecker Garden (not the glass building closer to The Tanks which is the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre). On Tuesdays at 7.30am you can join a 2 hour birdwatching tour starting from the Friends house. No need to book - just turn up, the tours are free.
Your holiday home is ideally located to enjoy the best that Cairns has to offer. Your house, a timber Queenslander, has been completely renovated and added to with the very high ceiling addition that looks onto the swimming pool.
King bedroom 1, downstairs, opens directly onto the back garden and swimming pool. It has has a large ensuite bathroom with a spa bathshower and separate toilet. King bedroom 2, upstairs, has a view to the south as far as Walsh's Pyramid. The other two bedrooms upstairs have queen size beds and share a large bathroom with bath, shower and separate toilet. A third bathroom with toilet and basin is downstairs.
