• Botanical Gardens: These marvelous gardens display an extraordinary collection of tropical rainforest plants including many rare palms. Surrounding them are the larger parkland gardens and Cairns Centenary Lakes. A boardwalk also leads through a natural palm and pandanus swamp. Two walking tracks over the Whitfield Range begin here.
• The Tanks (next to Botanical gardens): a multi-use venue for theatre, music, exhibitions and week-end markets.
• The Rondo Theatre Regular local productions.
• Cairns CBD: Civic Centre Theatre, Cairns Convention Centre (home of Cairns Taipans NBL team), Cairns casino,cinemas, restaurants, Cairns train station (for Kuranda train).
• Marlin Marina: embarkation point for the Gt. Barrier Reef
• The Esplanade and swimming lagoon: fantastic large seawater pool. Great for the kids. Lifeguards on duty. BBQs. The Esplanade runs for 2.5 km and includes a brilliant playground and skate park.
• Churches: St John’s Anglican, cnr Minnie/Lake Sts and St Monica’s Catholic, Abbott St
• SkyRail and Tjabukai Aboriginal Cultural Park (15 min. drive)
• Golf Courses: Cairns Golf club 15 min. drive, Paradise Palms 25 min drive.
• Copperlode Dam: in the hills overlooking the city (16km). Beautiful place to have breakfast in the café or bring your own and use the BBQ.
• Crystal Cascades: at the end of the Freshwater valley – Freshwater Ck is fed from the Copperlode dam. Lovely swimming holes in the rainforest. Very scenic.
• Northern Beaches: Machan’s Beach (closest – 10 min drive),, Holloway’s Beach, Yorkey’s Knob, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove and Ellis Beach (furthest – 35 min drive).
