Review - September 2016 (from AirBnB)

Our family (2 adults and 3 kids aged 11, 5 and 2) absolutely loved staying at the Old Pottery at Etty Bay during our holidays in Australia! John and Deborah were the perfect hosts. They responded very quickly to our e-mails and provided lots of really useful information. The guideline documents they've put together explained perfectly where to find things in the house and how to use the appliances - really helpful! They even provided us with some provisions for our first night so we didn't have to go shopping straight away, which was really thoughtful - thank you! Both John and Deborah are very knowledgeable about the local area and could suggest many things to see and do outside Etty Bay. The house is very privately located at the edge of a large rainforest reserve with spectacular views over the Coral Sea and access to an idyllic "private" beach only a short walk from the house. We really enjoyed the serenity and the amazing wildlife, including a number of cassowaries, a goana, beautiful butterflies, geckos, frogs and sea turtles. Etty Bay also makes a great base for exploring the many amazing sights in Far North Queensland. Although we loved the amazing "private" beach so much that we spent most of our time there swimming, fishing and playing with the kids. The Old Pottery itself was extremely clean and very nicely decorated, with plenty of linen and towels for our two-week stay. The kitchen is very well equipped with almost everything you could think of - we really enjoyed using appliances we don`t even have at home! We also appreciated all the extras that you don´t usually get in a holiday house, such as baking accessories, pancake pan, sandwich bags, mixer, sandwich toaster, eski, insect coils, etc. It's the kind of place you feel instantly at home in. The Old Pottery was exactly what we were looking for: a clean, comfortable, spacious and well-equipped holiday house located well away from any neighbours and close to nature and the sea. All in all, it's best place we have ever stayed! We will definitely be back again!

The Old Pottery, Etty Bay

Etty Bay - Cairns 105km (1½ hrs), 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6

The present owners have been coming here since their parents bought the property in the 1950s. Their mother was the potter and the ground floor of this extensively modernised house was her studio. Family members use the upstairs apartment and mainly come at weekends. The whole house can sometimes be rented for stays of a week or more by special arrangement with the owners.

Many locals consider Etty Bay the most beautiful beach in the area - simply because it is not well known to tourists and so is one of the hidden gems of North Queensland. Etty Bay has a white sand beach well sheltered from the south-easterly.

The two front bedrooms are shown with single beds but convert to doubles very easily. The main bedroom has a queen bed.

This is an escape artist's dream home - fully modernised with a fantastic kitchen but the atmosphere is still that of a simple pottery studio over-looking a beautiful bay. There is nothing like falling asleep to the gentle sound of the waves or waking to a spectacular dawn and the strange calls of the orange footed scrubhens .... and don't be surprised if a Cassowary comes calling - it's that sort of a place. We recommend forgetting the rest of the world for at least a week.
